I'm excited to announce that I'm running for re-election to @DCSBOE. I'm a Ward 1 neighbor, a DC teacher, a union member, and a committed advocate for students, families and teachers. I'm ready to continue working together to build a better education system for our community!

OSSE has educator workforce reports and educator retention briefs on their website. I’ve pushed for a decade for this data to be released annually and consistently.

Students need to be prepared for college and careers. Tests are a part of that preparation and are important measures for ensuring students are making progress. Yet, they are not the entire picture. That was my point.

Don’t misrepresent my views, please. Teacher turnover in DC over the last decade has been considerably higher than other urban districts. It’s different now not because of impact but from other factors such as the employment situation in DC.

I reject that a higher impact score is equivalent to improved teaching skills. The biggest finding of the study is that the threat of dismissal caused greater teacher attrition of the lowest performing teacher. The data is from SY 2010-2011 according to page 29 of the study.

Ultimately, the evaluation system contributes to massive teacher turnover, which ultimately lessens student achievement in the long run through disruption. The harm from impact far outweighs the good. My vision of student success goes far beyond just how a student does on a test.

Ultimately, Impact does not help teachers improve their instruction. We need a more nuanced conversation. We need to focus as a city on how to create a better evaluation system that best serves students and teachers. Impact is not it.
